R. Buckminster Fuller (1895–1983) was an American architect, systems theorist, and inventor best known for the geodesic dome. His work is a recurring background presence in the archive — as the structural tradition Baer explicitly departed from, as the intellectual lineage behind the New Communalist counterculture, and as the institutional figure who awarded Drop City its Dymaxion Award.

Relationship to Baer

Fuller appears three ways in the archive:

1. The structural foil. The Zome Primer (1970) opens with an explicit comparison of zomes and geodesic domes that frames Baer’s work as a conscious departure:

It is always part of a sphere — a low bubble or a high bubble — its floor is always a circle — any variation would destroy the structural properties of the geodesic dome. The geodesic dome, if it is large and composed of many edges and joints, has many different edge lengths. It is complicated in structure and simple in shape. Zomes are simple in structure and complicated in shape.

The zome word itself was coined partly as protection against people calling Baer’s structures “geodesic domes and Fuller type domes. They aren’t.” (Dome Cookbook, p. 24.)

2. The intellectual lineage. Kayatekin’s 2025 academic paper places Baer within the New Communalist thread of the American counterculture — the strand that sought to mobilise change by reshaping the material and built world rather than through political struggle — and states that “a significant root of this thread traces back to Buckminster Fuller.” Fuller is the upstream figure in the genealogy: Fuller → New Communalism → Baer.

3. The admired but doubted precursor. Baer’s first documented encounter with Fuller’s work: London, October 1963 — Baer buys Fuller’s untitled Epic Poem on industrialization, having “never heard of Fuller,” and calls it “the best book Fuller has written… I felt as if my mind were learning to swim.” The skepticism is present from the start, in the same Dome Cookbook passage: he can’t understand the “Omni Directional Halo crap,” asks why a geometric transformation needs Fuller’s name on it (“Fuller Synergetic Treatment” — margin note: “sounds like a hair oil”), and doubts Fuller’s originality outright: a multi-frequency geodesic planetarium was built in Germany in 1922, and “I don’t believe it was Buckminster Fuller” who invented the form. Baer wrote Fuller a letter about the German domes; Fuller never answered.

Drop City and the Dymaxion Award

Clark Richert, Gene Bernofsky, and JoAnn Bernofsky founded Drop City in 1965 after hearing Fuller speak at the University of Colorado. The commune received a $500 Dymaxion Award from Fuller himself for its “economically poetic architecture.” This is the connection that brought Baer to Drop City — his first visit, in April 1966, was to a community endorsed by the most famous builder of his era, and his journal reaction was confidence, not deference: “Seeing Drop City specially the mistakes and weak materials gave me great confidence.” By 2011, museum discourse had promoted Baer from visitor to co-founder of the tradition: MCA Denver’s “West of Center” exhibition described Drop City’s dome architecture as “originally inspired by the visionary ideas of Buckminster Fuller and Steve Baer” — the two named as parallel visionaries.

Institutional co-presence

The LBL Appropriate Energy Technology Library Bibliography (Hannah R. Clark, 1979) held both of Baer’s books — Sunspots (1977 printing) in the solar-techniques section and the Zome Primer in the design section — in the same DOE-funded library that also listed The Dymaxion World of Buckminster Fuller: the federal alternative-energy canon implicitly grouping the two as parallel contributions. (Clark’s entry mis-transcribes the Zome Primer’s dome/zome comparison as “complicated in structure and complicated in shape. Zomes are simple in structure and simple in shape” — the primer itself reads as quoted above.)

The Fuller → Baer → Tuazon lineage

Jonathan Rinck’s 2019 Detroit Art Review piece on Oscar Tuazon explicitly names Baer, Fuller, and Stewart Brand together as “first-generation environmentalists” whose publications inspired Tuazon’s work, with Tuazon representing “the next generation of zero-waste domestic architecture.” In this framing Baer is not Fuller’s follower but his peer in the first generation — consistent with the MCA Denver framing above.
