Solar Fool — Theory

1. Identity

Solar Fool is an LLM-curated knowledge base that preserves the Steve Baer / Zomeworks passive-solar and thermal archive (1968–2025) as inspectable markdown, and — held co-equally — an advocacy platform for reviving that passive heating and cooling technology. The canonical knowledge lives as plaintext; a static website is generated from it.

2. Why It Exists

The archive was fragmenting. The knowledge lived in several places at once — a scattered set of repositories and a hosted wiki that had stopped evolving — with no single place that was authoritative, durable, and inspectable. Meanwhile the work it documents, a lineage of passive heating and cooling design that once flourished, has been largely forgotten in favor of mechanical climate control.

Solar Fool exists to end both losses at once: to give the archive a single home where the knowledge is canonical and cannot be quietly captured by whatever tool happens to render it, and to make that preserved knowledge a living case for the technology rather than a museum exhibit. Preservation and revival are the same act here.

3. Core Theory

The system believes that source material is sacred and immutable: what was registered is what existed, and it is never edited to fit a later narrative. It believes that understanding is distilled, not asserted: every compiled article is a distillation traceable back to the raw sources it came from. It believes that a human decides what matters and what is true, while the machine does the bookkeeping — registration, cross-linking, compilation, maintenance — so that knowledge compounds instead of scattering.

It believes presentation is derived and disposable. Any website, wiki, or export is a projection of the knowledge base, reproducible on demand and never the place truth lives.

And it believes preservation and advocacy are co-equal. The archive is kept with the rigor of a historical record and wielded with the intent of a movement. Neither is allowed to dominate: advocacy that bends the record is corruption; preservation that refuses to make the case is abdication.

Solar Fool mirrors a real historical lineage — the people, devices, structures, and ideas of Steve Baer, Zomeworks, and the surrounding passive-solar and thermal-design world, from its counterculture origins through decades of engineering. It serves the researchers, builders, preservationists, and advocates who want to understand that work, trace its provenance, and carry it forward. It stands in direct relationship to a present-day effort to offer passive heating and cooling as a genuine alternative to conventional mechanical systems.

5. Central Metaphors

  • The vault — the knowledge base as a single, durable, inspectable store the curator tends.

6. Theories Considered

Alternative Theory: A hosted wiki application is the source of truth. Advantages: rich editing interface, immediate publishing, familiar to contributors, hosting handled for you. Why not chosen: it makes the canonical knowledge captive to a running service and its database. When that service stagnates or its export drifts, the truth becomes hard to inspect, move, or trust. The knowledge must outlive any tool that renders it. What would change our mind: a hosted tool that made durable, inspectable plaintext the authoritative form and treated its own database as the disposable projection.

Alternative Theory: Split the concerns across separate repositories (knowledge, presentation, publishing). Advantages: clean separation of responsibilities; each part evolves independently. Why not chosen: it fragmented the single source of truth and required synchronization pipelines that inevitably drifted, producing several near-copies with no clear authority. One canonical home removes the drift. What would change our mind: if the pieces genuinely had independent lifecycles and owners, separation might outweigh the cost of keeping them in sync.

Alternative Theory: The website is the primary artifact; the content serves the site. Advantages: presentation-first thinking, immediate polish, everything optimized for the reader. Why not chosen: it inverts the hierarchy. When the site is primary, edits happen in the site and the knowledge becomes a byproduct of a rendering tool. Here the knowledge is primary and the site is generated from it. What would change our mind: nothing foreseeable — this inversion is close to the heart of the theory.

Alternative Theory: Be purely an archive, or purely an advocacy site. Advantages: a single, simpler identity; easier to explain and to keep coherent. Why not chosen: a pure archive lets the technology stay forgotten; a pure advocacy site loses the rigor that makes the case credible. The project deliberately holds both. What would change our mind: if the two goals ever genuinely conflicted such that serving both corrupted the record, the archive’s integrity would win and advocacy would move elsewhere.

Alternative Theory: An unbounded personal vault that ingests anything of interest. Advantages: maximum flexibility; nothing worth keeping is ever turned away. Why not chosen: a boundary is what keeps the archive coherent and trustworthy. The lineage is the spine; unbounded accretion would dissolve the project’s identity. What would change our mind: a deliberate decision to redefine the subject itself, made visibly and recorded — not incremental scope creep.

7. Responsibilities

  • Hold the canonical, authoritative record of the Baer / Zomeworks passive-solar lineage.
  • Register source material immutably, with provenance.
  • Distill compiled understanding that always traces back to its sources.

8. Boundaries

  • Not a general passive-solar encyclopedia — the subject is the Baer / Zomeworks lineage, and adjacent material enters only where it illuminates that lineage.
  • Not a hosting platform, content-management application, or editing service.
  • Not a place where truth lives inside the presentation layer.
  • Not a product, storefront, or commercialization engine for the technology — building and selling the technology is a separate concern.
  • Not a task tracker or project-management surface; operational tracking is scaffolding around the knowledge, not knowledge.

  • Letting edits happen in the presentation layer, so the site (or a hosted wiki) quietly becomes where truth is maintained.
  • Ingesting material outside the lineage because it is interesting or convenient, diluting the subject until the identity blurs.
