The Bliss presentation

The conference’s central contribution to this archive is Ray Bliss‘s report of a working nocturnal radiation cooling system — “Performance of an Experimental System Using Solar Energy for Heating and Night Radiation for Cooling a Building” (Daniels, Ch. 9, footnote 170). At a house in Arizona, Bliss used an unglazed flat-plate collector and a black cloth radiator 280 ft² in area; the “cold,” amounting to 120,000 BTU, was stored in a 10-ton pile of rocks buried in the ground — equivalent to about 2 tons of refrigeration (Daniels §13.3).

This is 1961 experimental data for night-sky radiative cooling applied to a building — six years before Harold Hay‘s Phoenix Skytherm prototype and four decades before Baer’s Cool Cell. Daniels’ accompanying figure for the mechanism, 10–35 BTU/ft²/hr (2.9–10.3 W/ft²), matches Baer’s independent 2002 heated-vs-unheated-plates finding that night radiation exceeds 9.5 W/ft².

The ISBN is a real Cloudburst Press book, but the title is probably wrong; the physical book needs examination to determine its actual identity. The entry also appears in the print-books list in Books with the same caveat.
