How they work
Four components: solar collector, filter, pump, flow control valve. Pool water circulates through the filter, then through the collector, then back to the pool.
Night cooling use case (explicitly stated by DOE):
In hot climates, the collector(s) can also be used to cool the pool during peak summer months by circulating the water through the collector(s) at night.
This is the same principle Baer’s pool-heater cooling concept applies to buildings — using the same collectors at night to radiate heat to the sky. The DOE validates the reversal as standard practice for pool temperature management.
Collector types

| Glazed | Copper tubing on aluminum plate, iron-tempered glass cover | Year-round / cold climates; more efficient in cold weather |
Unglazed systems can drain back to pool when not in use — freeze protection without antifreeze. Even in cold climates, unglazed may be more cost-effective than glazed if the season is right.
Cost and sizing
- System cost: $2,500–$4,000 installed
- Payback: 1–7 years (depending on local fuel costs and solar resource)
- Collector area: 50%–100% of pool surface area (more in cloudy/cool climates)
- Example (Florida): 15×30 ft pool (450 sq ft) needs 450 sq ft of collector for year-round use
- Example (Northern CA): 6–8 month season; typically 60%–70% of pool area
Orientation and tilt
- Orientation: True south optimal; up to 45° east or west acceptable
- Tilt for summer-only: latitude minus 10°–15°
- Tilt for year-round: equal to latitude
- Flat roof mounting is acceptable — not optimal but not significantly worse
