The Dover Sun House (1948)

Built by engineer Maria Telkes, architect Eleanor Raymond, and sculptor/funder Amelia Peabody in Dover, Massachusetts. Used a Glauber’s-salt heat-storage medium behind a solar-collecting south wall — an active/passive hybrid, not a pure passive-mass system.

The publicity campaign

  • Life magazine ran “A New House in Dover, Mass., Has Been Comfortably Warm All Winter Without a Furnace.”
  • Popular Science called the house possibly more important than the atom bomb.
  • The house drew roughly 3,000 public visitors.

The technical failure behind the hype

  • The Glauber’s-salt storage medium stratified over repeated cycles and its containers corroded and leaked.
  • By the third winter the family needed supplemental electric heat, and eventually a conventional furnace.
  • Coverage at the time emphasized the comfort and novelty of the house without surfacing these failures — the media narrative outran the engineering.

Why it stalled

Rinde’s explicit causal argument: the technology “did not get good enough fast enough to meet the demands of the massive housing boom,” and federal postwar investment prioritized conventional fuel infrastructure over solar — a structural/political barrier layered on top of the technical one.
