Recommends a two-phase workshop process: Phase 1 is an internal stakeholder workshop to lock goals, objectives, target audience, and spatial layout; Phase 2 is a collaborative session defining themes/subthemes, media approach, and the visitor journey. Everything in the plan should trace back to the stated goals. A full interpretive plan document should include: planning overview (goals/outcomes/experience mapping), design & content (themes, visual inspiration, walkthrough schematics, accessibility features), requirements/parameters (regulatory, staffing, maintenance), and a project timeline/budget. Frames the interpretive plan itself as a credibility artifact useful for fundraising and donor validation, not just an internal design tool.

Small-footprint tactics (Gecko Group)

Tactics for tight square footage directly applicable to a shipping-container interior: double-sided mobile/rollaway units, rotating panels or “spin towers” to layer multiple content tiers without expanding footprint, and slider mechanisms to progressively reveal deeper content. Leverage architectural features already present (walls, windows, columns) as display surfaces rather than adding freestanding fixtures. Engage multiple senses (tactile/hands-on stations) rather than relying on text panels alone, to hold attention in a small physical footprint. Core principle: break complex technical/scientific concepts into simple, layered, visual formats.
