The performance gap

UK evaluations found leading-edge green buildings using up to 3.5x more energy than their design predicted, with 3.8x the predicted carbon emissions — the opposite of what publicity claimed. Researcher David Coley’s study found a quarter of building professionals evaluating energy-saving measures made judgments “worse than a person responding at random.”

A superinsulated, triple-glazed showcase school in southwest England malfunctioned so badly its windows had to auto-open to dump heat in winter — its passive-solar assumptions were modeled on a flat, unshaded site when the real site was a shaded valley.
