Biography
Kenneth L. Haggard (born 1935). BS in chemical engineering, then architecture: BA (North Carolina State), MFA in Urban Design (University of Pennsylvania). Taught at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo from 1967 to 1988; founded and directed its Renewable Energy Institute (1984-1988).
1972-1975: Principal Investigator for the HUD-funded “Research Evaluation of a System of Natural Air-Conditioning,” which “built and tested the first 100% naturally heated and cooled home in the country” (the Atascadero roof-pond/Skytherm work, with the Prototype Roof Pond House).
From 1975 partnered with Polly Cooper; their architectural practice (from 1976) specialized in passive solar and sustainable design. ASES Passive Solar Pioneer Award 1996 (shared with Cooper). Key projects: Prototype Roof Pond House, Congregation Beth David Synagogue, San Luis Obispo Botanic Garden Education Center. Co-authored the “Passive Solar Handbook for California” (1980).
