Exterior and Exposure 1 Ratings Explained

Key findings

“Exterior” rated OSB is the correct product for permanent outdoor exposure; “Exposure 1” OSB is rated only for temporary weather exposure during construction (a few months at most under dry-ish conditions) and will structurally degrade under continuous outdoor use. The difference is in the adhesive/resin formulation and waterproofing of the bond line, not just a surface coating — sealant cannot compensate for buying the wrong OSB grade. Even Exposure 1 panels, if used temporarily outdoors, need to be raised on 4x4 runners (never laid flat on the ground), tarped with air circulation, and joints left with 1/8” gaps for moisture-driven expansion.
