Important location correction

This site is San Antonio, not the Rio Grande Valley (McAllen/Brownsville) region the earlier climate research in this KB was based on (NWS Brownsville RGV heat index report). The two are roughly 220 miles apart and sit in different NWS forecast zones with materially different climates:

  • Rio Grande Valley (prior research): heat index ≥108°F on two-thirds of summer days; freezes almost nonexistent (~5 events in over a century).
  • San Antonio (this station’s actual region): humid subtropical, but somewhat less extreme — average August high ~97°F, relative humidity swings from ~83% at 6am to ~48% at 3pm, 122 days/year in the 90s°F, 18 days/year above 100°F, and actual winter freezes occur most years (unlike the RGV).

San Antonio’s afternoon humidity is meaningfully lower than the RGV’s, but its early-morning/overnight humidity is high (~83%) — and overnight is exactly when night-sky radiative cooling would need to work. The climate-mismatch concern from Night-sky radiative cooling § Climate dependency likely still applies, but less severely than the RGV data alone would suggest.

(One day’s reading — not a normal; the station was showing “Offline” for live current conditions at time of ingest, with this pulled from its own daily-history view.)

Why it matters for this archive

This station is the actual, hyperlocal, continuously-logging reference point for the prototype’s real deployment site — far more precise than the regional NWS climatology used earlier. It should serve two roles in the experiment: (1) correcting the climate assumptions in Designing a miniature Double Play experiment from generic “South Texas” to San Antonio specifically, and (2) as a live control/validation source the Pi Zero logger’s own readings can be checked against once deployed.
