Diffusion of Green Building Guidelines as Innovation in Developing Countries

Method
Survey of 110 experts across Indonesia and Turkey, applying Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovations framework to green-building assessment-system uptake in the architecture/engineering/construction (AEC) industry, building on prior parallel research in India.
Key findings
- Consistent adopter-role pattern: environmental groups act as innovators, large business houses as early adopters, and nodal (government) agencies as early majority.
- Both countries showed a substantially higher share of innovators/early adopters than Rogers’ classic bell curve predicts, and a smaller-than-expected laggard tail — useful building innovations can diffuse faster than the textbook S-curve once client demand and market conditions push adoption.
- Client/market demand, not just technical merit, was identified as the primary accelerant of diffusion.
